It might just be the tradition of your kids ministry to participate in The Light Kids Conference as a way of building some spiritual enthusiasm and fun into the fabric of kids lives as they go through grade school.
But the old statistic, that evidently is still ringing true, fires me up! About 85% of people who follow Christ made a decision to do so between the ages of 4 and 14.
About 85% of people who are following Christ made a decision to do so between the ages of 4 and 14.
That’s a powerful motivator to speak into the lives of kids early and often. It’s one of the primary reasons I believe so strongly in healthy, vibrant and consistent children’s ministry in the local church. I know it all works together – helping adults build a spiritually healthy home, inviting parents to train up their child with Scripture, worship, prayer and a life of faith and helping to connect kids in church.
The Light Kids Conference is just one small piece to the puzzle, but I’m often reminded of a D.L. Moody quote: “If I had my life to live over, I would give all my time to children.” Moody realized the powerful effect the gospel can have in the heart and life of a child.
God has called children throughout scripture and he still does today.
I can still remember the very day my wife and I were diving down the road and discussed the idea for The Light Kids Conference. We hammered out most of the details, picked a day, named the event and hosted the first one about six months later (Spring of 2002). Since then, thousands of children have attended The Light. Our prayer continues to be for fruit that will last in these lives.
Here are some ideas for your church to get connected:
You can create some incentives for a few weeks leading up to The Light! Be creative… whomever can sign up a new friend gets to go for free. The church or children’s can ministry can purchase a free t-shirt for whichever kids have perfect attendance for the month leading up to The Light Kids Conference.
Bring a Friend
Encourage children to bring a friend to The Light Kids Conference. Kids will love the music, the entertainment, the food, the recreation and the sessions!
Rent a bus
Work out a plan with a neighboring school district to drive your entire children’s ministry to The Light in a school bus!
Parents: bring your child(ren) and their friends
It’s doesn’t have to be an official church group attending The Light. A parent can sign up their grade school child(ren) and invite along cousins, neighbors or friends to attend.
Limit to certain age groups
Maybe your kids ministry is too large to figure out transportation to The Light. Try limiting the age group. For example, you can limit a trip to The Light for those in 4th and 5th grade only. Kids will feel special that they are old enough and younger kids will be chomping at the bit to come next year!
Invite families to attend with children
Kids at The Light must be chaperoned, but it doesn’t have to be just children’s ministry leaders and kids. Make it an inter-generational event. Invite as many parents as you can to come along with kids. There is a discounted rate for adults.
A Sunday school class / small group can attend
Maybe you’re the leader of a Sunday School class or other small group in children’s ministry. You can invite your group to join you and couple other parents / leaders to attend The Light.
Buy t-shirts in advance for your kids
If you are planning to bring a group, you can arrange to order and purchase t-shirts for each child ahead of time. This way, you can all match during the event.
